Leggy, wriggling dribbler whose skills on the wing have been a key element in Porto's recent success.
He first emerged at the minor club Gil Vicente before earning a lucrative move to Sporting Lisbon in 1994.
But within a year he was on the move again back to his native area to join Vitoria Guimaraes where he began to blossom.
An unlikely figure with his socks rolled down, he nevertheless was an outstanding performer and was persuaded to join prestigious neighbours Porto in the summer of 1997.
Helped them to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup the following season and turned down the chance to join fellow Portuguese international Pauleta at Bordeaux.
Continues to be a member of the national squad even though he faces stiff opposition from the likes of Luis Figo and Sergio Conceicao for his berth on the wing.
