Rock solid in the tackle, his consistency helped Sporting to another championship crown recently.
Came through the club's youth ranks and first came to international prominence as a member of the Portuguese squad that finished fourth at the 1996 Olympics in the United States.
Also filled in at right-back for his club in the last 12 months and he may pop up there if the national coach continues to play Fernando Couto and Jorge Costa at the heart of his defence.
