Wiltord - fighting for a striking berth (Allsport)
SYLVAIN WILTORD
Position: Forward
Born: 10.05.74
Club: Arsenal
Sylvain Wiltord joined the 'French Revolution' at Highbury two years ago and became a national hero when scoring in the last minute in the Euro 2000 final against Italy which France went on to win 2-1 in extra-time.
Made a big name for himself as a pacy goalscorer with Bordeaux and Gunners boss Arsene Wenger eventually splashed out £12m for him in August 2000 to replace the firepower of the departed Nicolas Anelka.
Struggled to make an impact at first and suffered comparison with the absolutely electric Thierry Henry.
Spent much of the time on the bench in his first season that led to speculation he could be leaving.
But this season he has found a new lease of life playing wide right rather than down the middle and has even started occupying that position in the national side.
Will be fighting for a starting spot this summer alongside a clutch of world-class strikers.
Helped the Gunners win the Double, getting the goal that clinched the title in a 1-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford.
