The 27-year-old plays in a holding midfield role for the Russians.
Earning his living in France with Bordeaux, Smertin made his debut in 1998 and won six caps during a successful qualifying campaign.
Something of an enforcer, Smertin can also play at the back.
Won the French League Cup at the end of the season – his second in France – having previously played for Lokomotiv Moscow in his home country.
Rarely ventures forward, but will by a key man in repelling the opposition in the Far East where the hot conditions will not favour a man who hails from Siberia.
