Picture Nikiforov - back in Russian fold after spat (Allsport).

YURI NIKIFOROV

Position: Defender
Born: 16.09.70
Club: PSV Eindhoven

With more than 50 caps to his name, Yuri Nikiforov is one of the most experienced defenders in the Russian squad having played at both USA 94 and Euro 96.

Helped PSV Eindhoven to the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup in 2001/02 and also played his part in Russia's World Cup qualifying campaign which saw them top European group one.

Formerly with Spartak Moscow and Spanish side Sporting Gijon, Nikiforov is enjoying a new lease of life with the national team after originally quitting international football in 1998.

He fell out with Russian Federation chief Vyacheslav Koloskov and when he was charged with tax evasion over matters concerning payments to players, it proved the final straw.

After paying a fine, Nikiforov vowed never to play for his country again, but returned to the fold last year after being persuaded back by current coach Oleg Romantsev.
