Now a veteran of the international scene, he became the first Chinese player in Serie A after Perugia signed him on a one-year loan deal from Sichuan Quanxing in the summer of 2000.
However, despite this accolade, the former Guangdong midfielder's chances were hard to come by and the Italian side never really had a place in their team for him.
Switching back to Sichuan Dahe in March of this year having not savoured any Serie A action, he has quickly battled to prove his match fitness ahead of this summer's finals.
He has spoken of how the experience in Europe has still helped his game, and the move is still viewed in China as a major step to bringing Chinese football nearer to the rest of the world.
