He was born in Buenos Aires and spent the formative years of his career at River Plate, where he spent seven seasons.
Helping River to the Copa Libertadores in 1996, he made the transition to French league football in 1999, and captured the Le Championnat title in his first season at the Stade Louis II. In this same campaign, his French league adversaries voted him player of the season.
It was during the late 1990s that he managed to break into the national squad, for whom he has provided a hit with consistent displays, and it is often hard to think of him as just a 25-year-old.
