MATSILELE SONO

By Reece Killworth, Sportinglife.com

Despite leading South Africa to the World Cup and the African Nations Cup, Carlos Queiroz knew that his job was at stake this summer.

The Portuguese coach had signed a two-year contract when he took the job in August 2000 and that deal expired following this summer's finals.

What he did not realise, though, was that a quarter-final exit at the African Nations Cup earlier this year would cost him his job.

Queiroz claimed after the disappointment in Mali that he would stay on, but techincal director Matsilele 'Jomo' Sono wanted more sway in team selection.

Queiroz again stated his desire to stay on as the sole man in charge, but he soon realised his card was marked and agreed to part company with the South Africans.

Sono will now lead them to the World Cup knowing that an impressive showing in the Far East could see him handed a longer deal.
