Picture Schaefer - already a champion (Allsport).

WINFRIED SCHAEFER

By Reece Killworth, Sportinglife.com

Winfried Schaefer is probably the most high-profile manager Cameroon have ever had - and his appointment has already proved a success.

Despite having three different coaches in qualifying the Olympic champions were the first team to reach the World Cup.

But by that time Jean-Paul Akono and Pierre Lechantre had fallen by the wayside while Robert Corfou was only in the hot-seat for one the closing stages of qualifying as a caretaker coach.

Schaefer moved into the post in September last year and lifted his first trophy as Cameroon coach when they won the African Nations Cup in February.

The German has experience of coaching at the top level in Europe with Borussia Monchengladbach, Karlsruhe, VfB Stuttgart and TB Berlin after a playing career in which he won the UEFA Cup with Gladbach.

With his shock of blond hair, Schaefer is one of the easiest coaches to pick out on the touchline but he will be more than happy to fade into the background if it means his players succeed in the Far East.
