Picture Rafael Marquez - one for the future. (Allsport)

RAFAEL MARQUEZ

Position: Defender
Born: 13.02.79
Club: Monaco

Rafael Marquez is the rising star of Mexican football, and one of their few players plying their trade in Europe.

From the moment he broke in to the side at Atlas in his home country, Marquez has been tipped for the top.

And his big break came in 1999 when he was thrust from the relative obscurity of Atlas to the bright lights of Monaco.

Although he has been troubled by injuries during his time in the Principality, Marquez has already attracted interest from the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid and looks set for a bright future in the game.

At international level he is beginning to build an understanding with the vastly-experienced Claudio Suarez.

Still in his early 20s, Marquez has already tasted success at both international and domestic level - winning the Confederations Cup with Mexico in 1999 and the French title with Monaco in 2000.
