Francisco Arce is an integral part of a Paraguay defence which is dominated by experienced players.

While Carlos Gamarra's international reputation has been boosted by spells with Benfica and Atletico Madrid, Arce has gone about his job with quiet efficiency.

But his pedigree is evident.

Arce has been named in the South American Team of The Year five times in the last six years and was shortlisted for the Player of The Year award last year - finishing eighth behind the likes of Romario.

He looked set to leave Palmeiras - his club side - last year as they were keen to cut their expenditure, but he has stayed with them and remains a key member of their squad.
