Gamarra - a force to be reckoned with. (Allsport)
CARLOS GAMARRA
Position: Defender
Born: 17.11.71
Club: Inter Milan
Any player who lists Benfica and Atletico Madrid amongst his former clubs is clearly a force to be reckoned with, and that is certainly the case with Carlos Gamarra.
In a region where Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay tend to get the most plaudits, Gamarra has been named in the South American Team of the Year four times in the last six years as he has become a settled member of the Paraguay national side playing as either a central defender or left-back.
His club career has certainly not been settled, though.
After starting out as Cerro Porteno and returning there after a brief spell at Independiente, Gamarra headed for Internacional.
Just two seasons later he was off to Benfica, where he stayed for a season before joining Corinthians.
Next up was Atletico Madrid for a season, followed by Flamenco before he moved to AEK Athens on loan at the start of last season.
He helped AEK to win the Greek Cup and finish second in the league, drawing the attention of Italian scouts with fine displays against Inter Milan in the UEFA Cup.
And it was Inter who eventually held off city rivals AC to snare the Paraguayan two weeks before the World Cup started.
Gamarra is a powerful, versatile defender who can play in either three or four-man defences.
He is good in the air and reads the game well.
All in all, a tough opponent.
