Picture Sorensen - replaced Peter Schmeichel. (Allsport)

THOMAS SORENSEN

Position: Goalkeeper
Born: 12.06.76
Club: Sunderland

Not many people would fancy stepping into the sizeable boots of Peter Schmeichel - but Thomas Sorensen has done so in style.

When Schmeichel quit international football, Sorensen was drafted straight into the team and was part of the Danish defence that conceded just six goals as they came through qualifying unscathed.

As well as replacing Schmeichel in the Denmark side, Sorensen was also tipped to replace him at Manchester United after keeping 29 clean sheets in the 1998-99 season - a club record.

Although that never came off, Sorensen has gone from strength to strength and combines the bravery and shot-stopping ability that all keepers need.

He began his career with Odense before making a £500,000 to Wearside in 1998.

Little did he know then that four years later he would be plying his trade in the World Cup.
