Picture Swierczewski - anchors Poland's midfield. (Allsport)

PIOTR SWIERCZEWSKI

Position: Midfield
Born: 04.08.72
Club: Marseille

Piotr Swierczewski is the anchorman on who Poland's World Cup campaign will be based.

The Marseille star holds firm in the centre of midfield, allowing his colleagues to break forward to support the likes of Emmanuel Olisadebe.

Swierczewski has plied his trade in France since 1993, when he joined St Etienne from GKS Katowice.

From St Etienne he went on to Bastia before joining OM before the start of the 2001-02 season.

He was immediately handed the vice-captaincy by the French outfit to underline his leadership qualities.

Swierczewski is strong in the tackle - providing a valuable barrier in front of Poland's formidable central defensive pairing, but also has the ability to spread the ball around in midfield.

While the likes of Olisadebe and Pawel Kryszalowicz grab the headlines, Swierczewski goes about his job almost un-noticed, but to maximum effect.
