Ivan Kaviedes started the World Cup qualifiers as Hernan Gomez's fifth-choice striker.
Three goals - and a string of excellent performances - later and the Celta Vigo youngster has emerged as Agustin Delgado's chosen partner up front.
Kaviedes, who made his international debut back in 1998, came of age on the international scene as his side beat Brazil 1-0 in their successful qualifying campaign.
He set up Delgado's winning goal as well as striking the bar with a cheeky lob - and in doing so all but booked himself a spot on the plane this summer.
Kaviedes has always had an eye for goal and came to the nation's attention in 1998 when he netted an incredible 42 goals in 37 matches.
Since then he has been turned into more of a link-up merchant and is equally happy with his back to goal.
He has struggled to hold down a first-team place at Celta Vigo and has spent lengthy spells out on loan after Gomez voiced concern over his lack of action.
The latest spell took him to Barcelona de Guayaquil where he will be hoping he did enough to keep hold of his place at international level.
Should he do so, expect Kaviedes to be fired up to repay Gomez's faith in him.
