Delgado (right) - impressive strike rate. (Allsport)
AGUSTIN DELGADO
Position: Forward
Born: 23.12.74
Club: Southampton Last time Ecuador attempted to qualify for the World Cup Agustin Delgado was little more than a peripheral figure, scoring just two goals.
Since then he has transformed himself into one of South America's best strikers, earning a move to the English Premiership in the process.
Ecuador's route to Korea and Japan - which is their first World Cup appearance - was far from easy but the goals of Delgado saw them qualify with a match to spare.
He netted nine times to make him the joint top-scorer in the CONMEBOL qualifiers alongside Hernan Crespo.
That helped him maintain the tremendous strike rate he has had throughout his career, despite his early international disappointment.
Whether playing for El Nacional, Barcelona (in Ecuador) or Necaxa Delgado has averaged around a goal every two games - a record he has taken into his international career.
That saw Southampton shell out £3.5million for him in November, although Saints are yet to see the best of him as he has struggled with injuries.
What they can expect is a striker who is good in the air - thanks mainly to his strong build - and has an eye for goal as well as the ability to outpace most defenders in the world.
And where better to show that than at the World Cup?
