  COSTA RICA
Picture Wanchope - instant hit in England. (Allsport)

PAULO WANCHOPE

Position: Forward
Born: 31.07.76
Club: Manchester City

One of Costa Rica's few high-profile players, Paulo Wanchope proved an instant hit on his debut in England.

After signing for Premier League side Derby County, Wanchope scored a superb individual goal on his debut against Manchester United way back in April 1997.

Although often accused of being inconsistent, the striker moved to West Ham in a £3.5m deal in July 1999.

But when his move to London didn't work out he was on his way to Manchester City, who had just been promoted to England's top flight, and he scored a hat-trick on his home debut for the Blues.

Injury meant he missed some of City's games early this season in Division One, but he showed he had fully recovered by netting a hat-trick in his side's 5-1 thrashing of then league leaders Burnley in the final game of 2001.

Faced a fitness battle to be fit in time for the opening game after suffering a recurrence of a knee injury earlier this year.
