Bosko Balaban first came to prominence in the Croatian Under-21 side and once given his opportunity at senior level, blossomed as a player.

Six goals in his first seven full internationals (including a hat-trick against Latvia) did much to fire Croatia to the finals of World Cup 2002.

His form earned big-money moves - first to Dinamo Zagreb and then Aston Villa for £6million early this season.

He took some time to settle into the English style of play and had limited opportunities to show his true worth.

However his direct style and eye for a goal will soon win the doubters over - after all this is a player who was courted by Real Madrid and Barcelona before moving to England.

Will provide stiff competition for places up front.
