Pape Sarr is the all-action player in the centre of the Senegal team.
Much of their play goes through the Lens midfielder as he provides the link between their solid defence and exciting attack.
Sarr was persuaded to join the national squad after a visit by Senegal football federation Oumar Seck to Europe in November 1999.
He came through the junior ranks at St Etienne before joining Lens prior to the start of the 2001-02 season.
As well as his impressive stamina and tough tackling, Sarr has the handy knack of scoring important goals, often from set-pieces.
Impressed in the early stages of the African Nations Cup but blotted his copybook by seeing red in the semi-final victory over Nigeria.
That meant Sarr had to watch from the stands as his side were beaten in agonising fashion by Cameroon in the final.
