One of Argentina's stars at France 98, it was somewhat surprising that Ortega did not do better during his career in Europe.
Rowed with Claudio Ranieri at Valencia after signing from Sampdoria, which forced him to leave for Parma.
But he is now back in his native country playing for the infamous River Plate.
A midfield playmaker, the diminutive Ortega is about to embark on his third World Cup campaign.
Can play out wide as he did at USA 94, but was more effective four years ago.
Ortega impressed in France but ended the tournament on a sour note when he was sent off against Holland in the quarter-finals for head-butting Edwin van der Sar.
