  SOUTH AFRICA
Picture McCarthy - decent strike-rate for South Africa. (Allsport)

BENNI McCARTHY

Position: Forward
Born: 12.11.77
Club: Celta Vigo

Benni McCarthy will go down in South African footballing history as the first member of Bafana Bafana to score a goal in the World Cup finals.

McCarthy made his debut for South Africa in June 1997 against the Netherlands, but he had to wait six more games for his first goal.

However, not content with getting off the mark against Namibia, he went on to score all four in South Africa's 4-1 victory.

McCarthy has been prolific in front of goal for South Africa. His strike rate of eighteen goals in thirty-five appearances is excellent in international football and if he gets regular service from the likes of Quinton Fortune, then Bafana Bafana must have a strong chance of reaching the second round.

Failed to find the target in the African Nations Cup in February as the South Africans crashed out in the quarter-finals, but will be looking to get back to top form for the World Cup.
