Picture Ayala could meet Michael Owen again (Allsport).

ROBERTO AYALA

Position: Defender
Born: 17.04.73
Club: Valencia

It is somewhat ironic that many an Englishman's memory of Roberto Ayala is the sight of him being skinned by Michael Owen for 'that' goal in France 98.

For since then Ayala has since gone on to become one of the best defenders in the world.

He is the rock at the heart of the Argentine defence, and has a similar presence at club side Valencia.

He helped lead them to two consecutive Champions League finals after joining them from AC Milan.

A fine tackler and excellent in the air, Ayala is the perfect all-round defender, one who has reportedly attracted the interest of no less than Manchester United.

It is interesting to note that Ayala went into the last World Cup having endured a nightmare season with Napoli in Serie A.

Don't expect too many Owen-type incidents this time around.
