Picture Jorge Costa - steady defender (Allsport).

JORGE COSTA

Position: Defender
Born: 14.10.71
Club: Porto

Jorge Costa is a highly experienced centre-back who added to his football know-how by signing for Premiership side Charlton on loan last season.

Costa fell out with his coach at Porto, a club he joined ten years ago, and sought a return to first-team action at The Valley, fearing the axe for the World Cup finals.

He started in eight of Portugal's qualifiers as they topped one of the toughest European groups, seeing off Ireland and Holland on the way.

He even popped up with a goal away to Andorra and added another in the friendly against Spain in February.

A regular in the Portugal line-up for years now, Costa is a consistent rock-solid performer who has plenty of experience at the highest level having played more than 30 games in the Champions League with Porto.

Originally came to international prominence as part of Portugal's Under-20 World Championship-winning side of 1991.
