Only one member of Costa Rica's World Cup squad attended a dinner organised by the country's president Abel Pachecoto to thank for them for their efforts in Japan and Korea.

Pachecoto had arranged a lunch in the presidential house, but only officials from the local Football Association and defender Jervis Drummond turned up.

The Saprissa player, who himself arrived 15 minutes late, told the president his team-mates would not participate in the lunch, and that he would represent them all.

Drummond said: "We were together for 40 days at the World Cup and each player has personal things to do."

Newspaper La Nacionmean reported that some of the players said they never received an official invitation.

But FA official Hermes Navarro had no time for excuses for the snub, and was furious with the squad's decision.

He said: "I have no words for this attitude. All I could do was apologise to the president."

A disappointed Pacheco said he just wanted to thank the team "for all the happiness the players gave us".

Costa Rica, playing in only their second finals, missed out on the second round on goal difference from Turkey.

They beat China 2-0 and drew with the Turks before a thrilling 5-2 loss to champions Brazil sealed their fate.
