McCarthy - linked with job in the press
PORTUGUESE RULE OUT FOREIGN OPTION
The Portuguese FA on Tuesday said they had no
intention of hosting Euro 2004 with a foreign coach in charge of the national
team.
Mick McCarthy, who took Ireland to the second round at the World Cup, was
linked in the British press with the position made vacant by Antonio Oliveira's
sacking.
But a Portuguese FA spokesman said that the organisation's
president, Dr Gilberto Madail, would not accept such an appointment.
"It is the president's intention to have a Portuguese coach and he is likely
to be named in August," said the spokesman.
Oliveira was sacked by fax last Tuesday, after Portugal failed to get out of
their opening group at the World Cup.
They beat Poland but were humiliatingly defeated by the USA and co-hosts
Korea.
Portugal have put Jose Romao and Rui Cador in temporary charge until a new
coach is named.
