Hernan Dario Gomez has been rewarded for leading
Ecuador to their first ever World Cup finals with a contract extension.
The Colombian, who guided the country to an unprecedented second-place in the
South American qualifying, has been offered a new deal which will take him
through to the 2006 World Cup.
"We talked to Hernan and told him we want him to stay. He asked us for time
to make the decision, we don't know if it will be one month or two. We just have
to wait", Ecuadorian football association president Luis Chiriboga said.
Ecuador exited at the group stage following defeats to Mexico and Italy.
However, they were able to take some pride from a win over Croatia and
Chiriboga believes Gomez has put together a side capable of performing at a
consistently high level in international football.
"With them we have to think about qualifying again for Germany 2006," he
said.
The Ecuadorian FA also announced that it will organise a friendly match
against a "top-level national team" so captain Alex Aguinaga can reach 100
matches with the national team.
