Anderlecht coach Aime Anthuenis has
emerged as the main front-runner to succeed Robert Waseige as coach of the
Belgian national team.
Waseige announced during the World Cup that he planned to step down after the
tournament to take the helm at Standard Liege for the third time in his
coaching career.
Excelsior Mouscron boss Hugo Broos was the man tipped to step into Waseige's
shoes but his club have vetoed any move from the Belgian Football Association
(KBVB), leaving Anthuenis as the main candidate.
KBVB President Jan Peeters revealed that talks with Anthuenis are now on the
cards.
"I had a talk with Mouscron president Jean-Pierre Detremmerie and he put
forward a veto so Broos is no longer candidate for us," said Peeters.
"We will negotiate first with Anthuenis, but this doesn't mean that he is our
first candidate.
"I have already heard though that Anderlecht wouldn't object to a possible
switch to the national team."
Three are three candidates reportedly in the running for the job, including
Anthuenis, with former PSV Eindhoven boss Eric Gerets and Rene Vandereycken the
other names being mooted about the Belgian press.
