SPAIN SQUAD RECEIVE HEROES' WELCOME
The Spanish World Cup squad arrived home on Monday
to a rapturous welcome.
More than 1000 people awaited the arrival of Jose Antonio Camacho's troops at
Barajas airport in Madrid.
Spain were knocked out of the World Cup at the quarter-final stage on
Saturday, losing on penalties to co-hosts Korea.
But the elimination was tinged with controversy after Spain had 'goals' from
Fernando Morientes and Ruben Baraja ruled out.
"Hands up, this is a robbery," was the chant that some fans opted for today,
as the team appeared. Others went for the more traditional "champions,
champions."
However most of the chants were reserved for Betis midfielder Joaquin, who was
outstanding in the tournament but missed the crucial penalty against Korea that
ended Spain's dream.
"Joaquin don't worry, Spain is with you," the supporters shouted.
The fans' reaction mirrors outrage in the Spanish media at the refereeing
errors in the match against Korea.
After the early elimination of top sides France, Argentina, Italy and
Portugal, many had been hopeful of the chances of a first ever World Cup.
But, that bullish feeling was dealt 'la faena de la muerte' - the killing
stroke of a matador - by the controversial decisions against Korea.
The national team will now be taken to the Zarzuela Palace where they will be
congratulated by King Juan Carlos.
