Mexico's players received a hot reception when they returned home following the World Cup defeat to rivals the United States.

Javier Aguirre's squad arrived in Mexico City and were greeted by unhappy fans, in mourning after the disappointing 2-0 second round defeat on Monday.

Striker Cuauhtemoc Blanco conceded the fans had every right to be dissatisfied with the US game, especially after a superb group campaign in Japan and Korea.

But Blanco moved quickly to reassure supporters they would bounce back.

He said: "We know we're the best team in the Concacaf section of the world, so we have to keep working."

Midfielder Gabriel Caballero feels the harsh criticism is unfair.

He points out that the Mexicans received high praise for their energetic and enterprising play during the finals.

He said: "The results may say another thing, but our football received compliments from everybody.

"I guess we could have done more (against the US), but we are on the right track.

"We played equal to equal to any team, and we showed how well we can play anywhere."
