Cesare Maldini's contract with the Paraguayan
national team has become the subject of a state investigation into tax evasion.
Investigators for the Paraguayan government have asked for a copy of the
six-month contract which took the Italian through to World Cup elimination.
Maldini signed a deal with the Paraguayan FA (APF) which ended after Paraguay
were knocked out of the World Cup.
Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Germany in the second round was the last Maldini
presided over and he returned to Italy to take up a scouting post with Serie A
side AC Milan.
Prosecutor Alejandro Nissen Pesolani told PA International: "We have asked
the APF for not only a copy of the contract of Cesare Maldini but also all the
documents regarding expenses, wages and bonuses.
"It is a penal investigation in accordance with the Paraguay law 1160, of tax
evasion. We will see what we will find."
APF spokesman Guillermo Batilana confirmed the investigation but he refused to
comment.
He said: "One of the prosecutors has asked the Paraguay Football Association
for a detailed report regarding the contract of the former coach Cesare
Maldini."
Pesolani was quick to point out that the investigation would not necessarily
show up tax evasion, but he said that if an individual is found guilty of the
offence they could face a jail sentence of up to a maximum of 10 years.
"It is not clear what we have and that is why we want to investigate, we do
not know if it is tax evasion," added Pesolani.
"I also want to reiterate that it has nothing to do with the results of the
national team in the World Cup.
"The APF is a non-profit organisation exempt from paying tax, but the third
persons have to pay tax. Therefore, Mr Maldini is subject to the law and rules
of this country once he starts working here."
Tax evasion in Paraguay can lead to a maximum jail sentence of 10 years.
