Jose Pekerman has emerged as the favourite to take over as the new coach of Argentina after receiving a personal recommendation from the president of the Argentine Football Association (AFA).

Pekerman is an AFA stalwart having served as the coach of the youth team for eight years before taking up the post of general manager of the national team in 1998.

AFA chief Julio Grondona believes that he is now ready for the role of head coach following Marcelo Bielsa's failure to take Argentina past the group stages of the World Cup.

Bielsa, whose contract expired after Argentina's elimination in Japan and South Korea, has been offered a new deal but is believed to be likely to reject the chance to stay on.

"I have a lot of faith in Jose. He's the first we will talk to, the first I need to listen to," Grondona told Argentine radio station Rivadavia.

"He has all the ability to make things better."

Other candidates include Carlos Bianchi and Oscar Ruggeri.

"Different coaches have the capacity and experience to conduct the national team. What I'm sure is that we don't need a foreign coach," Grondona added.
