Mexico's Alberto Garcia Aspe on Monday became the
latest in a string of veteran players to quit international football following
his team's World Cup exit.
The midfielder announced his decision after the 2-0 defeat by the United
States in Jeonju, having come on as a late substitute.
He follows the likes of Gabriel Batistuta and Youri Djorkaeff in retiring.
"I have played my last minutes, I retire," said the Puebla player.
The 35-year-old won 108 caps for Mexico, scoring 22 goals, but had lost his
place as a regular and did not appear in the group games.
"I think I have reached all my aims as a footballer," he said. "I am happy
with my achievements, although I am sad for my team which could have gone very
far."
The former UNAM player made his debut with the 'Tricolor' against Ecuador in
April 1988, since when he has been a regular squad member.
