Germany legend Karl-Heinz Rummenigge believes
Germany will have too much quality for prospective semi-final opponents Mexico
or the USA.
Rudi Voller's team booked their place in the quarter-finals with a 1-0 victory
over Paraguay thanks to Oliver Neuville's late strike.
Despite dominating the contest the Germans could not break down the South
Americans' dogged defence.
But Leverkusen striker Neuville popped up two minutes from time and
Rummenigge, who scored both German goals in the 3-2 World Cup final defeat to
Argentina in 1986, is confident that Voller's men can now reach the semis.
"Mexico or the USA [in the quarter-finals], these are two opponents which we
can beat," said Rummenigge.
"The semi-final is possible. Of course we have to improve our performance,
but this win has given us self-belief."
Former West Germany skipper Franz Beckenbauer, who lifted the trophy in 1974
and coached the 1990 World Cup-winning team, was impressed with the Germans'
fitness level against Paraguay.
He said: "Paraguay only defended and you cannot win this way. So the victory
was inevitable. Our excellent fitness paid off.
"The German team deserved to win. They raised the pressure in the second
half."
Mexico take on the USA in Jeonju to compete for the right to play
Germany in the last eight.
