Croatia boss Mirko Jozic has announced he
intends to quit following the failure of his team at the World Cup.
Jozic, who took over from Miroslav Blazevic in November 2000, was hugely
disappointed after his team failed to reach the last 16 of the tournament in the
Far East following a 1-0 defeat to Equador in their final group game.
The 62-year-old told Croatian sports daily Sportske Novosti: "My contract
expires on July 31 and on that date I will retire from my position."
He added that he decided to step down after the World Cup "independently of
the result".
Croatia, who finished third at France 98, were a big disappointment in their
first group match when they went down to a 1-0 defeat against Mexico. Jozic's
men gave themselves a great chance of reaching the knockout stages though with a
2-1 win against Italy in their second match.
But they missed out on a place in the second round after crashing to Ecuador,
missing a golden chance to qualify for the second phase at the expense of Group
G rivals Italy who qualified along with Mexico.
