Captain Juan Sebastian Veron admits he feels "destroyed" about Argentina's early exit from the World Cup.

The South Americans were eliminated from the competition on Tuesday after Sweden, who topped Group F, held them to a 1-1 draw, and England claimed the necessary point to see them progress against Nigeria.

It meant one of the favourites failed to reach the last 16 for the first time in nine tournaments.

And Manchester United star Veron admits that everyone is still in a state of shock by the failure to qualify.

He said: "I am destroyed. We didn't deserve this. I usually cry a lot and the night after the match I cried even more.

"Bitter? Of course, but calm. If we had lost by four goals, we could be regret our displays.

"But that's not the case. I think we did everything well."

"We came here to wear the Argentina shirt, to wear the Argentina colours on our chest with pride.

"But it ended in a way that we didn't expect and, I think, didn't deserve."

The squad will return to a barrage of abuse from the country's media.

Veron in particular was singled out for criticism after the 1-0 defeat to England, but he insists the squad are not to blame.

He added: "There will be critics. It will be said that we could have played better, but you have to look at what this team did.

"I think it was a disgrace we went out, and we can't find the answer to the big question, Why?"

Veron admits he was not at his best, and blamed the stress of a long season in the Premiership.

"I wasn't in my best shape, mainly on the mental side," he added.

"It was the end of a very tough season, and I was two months trying to cure my tendonitis."
