South Africa might have been dumped out of the World Cup but they are still seen as heroes back home.

Bafana Bafana (The Boys), as the side are affectionately known, were eliminated on goal difference after losing 3-2 to Spain in their last first round match on Wednesday.

But without exception the South African media toasted rather than roasted their team.

"So near, yet so far" said a front page headline in the Pretoria News, adding that the Bafana had done the nation proud even in defeat.

The Johannesburg Star was equally impressed..

"Bafana out, but they're still heroes," declared the Star's headline while an editorial said: "Our youngsters have shown the world we can compete with the best. They have done South Africa proud."

Even the Afrikaans newspaper, Beeld, normally devoted exclusively to rugby, carried a banner headline saying:

"SA steps out of the World Cup with pride."

"So close, Bafana Bafana," said the Sowetan newspaper.

"Despite this hard-to-swallow defeat, all credit must be bestowed on the national squad, including the technical team for a brave performance.

They have proved to the world that ours is a country that can no longer be ignored."
