The Slovenian national team are due to return
home on Saturday after a World Cup filled with high expectations ended in
disappointing failure with elimination in the first round.
After impressing the watching world with their attacking football at Euro 2000
much was expected of Srecko Katanec's team, led by the temperamental but often
inspirational forward Zlatko Zahovic.
Three defeats against Group B opponents Spain, South Africa and Paraguay,
however, plus a massive bust-up between Zahovic and Katanec, who resigned as a
result, saw the Slovenians exit Japan and Korea at the first hurdle.
They will return to Brnik airport in Slovenia on Saturday and the media are
waiting to see what kind of reception the players get from supporters.
Captain Ales Ceh has no regrets about the experience in the Far East as he
hangs up his international boots at the age of 34.
"I think we have played very well. The game against Paraguay was almost a
success for Slovenia. Our experience here at the World Cup competition has been
unbelievable," he said.
