Diego Forlan showed with one magical strike why Manchester United were so desperate to sign him in the middle of last season.

The 23-year-old, who has so far failed to hit the back of the net at Old Trafford since his move from Independiente, volleyed in from 20 yards today in a furious second-half fightback as the South Americans claimed a draw with Senegal.

The 3-3 result was not enough to lift them into the next round, but it was a gallant display in which Forlan and Co showed promise for the future.

"When I came on we were losing 3-0 and it looked almost impossible," Forlan said.

"But we began to score goals and we thought that we could do it. Sadly we missed one goal."

Forlan might have claimed the winner. He shot just wide when it looked easier to score.

"I didn't have enough calm to shoot the ball in the right way," he said.

Forlan had not played in the two previous matches. His exclusion is sure to be the source of debate back home as fans try to understand why Uruguay failed to progress.

The manner of Uruguay's exit has at least given the players and fans some consolation.

Senegal, after scoring a dubious penalty and building a 3-0 lead, had appeared ready to humiliate them.

Midfielder Gonzalo de los Santos said: "We're out of the World Cup, but we leave with our heads high. With five more minutes, we would've made it. We were very nervous and played with a lot of anxiety in the first half, and we paid for that."

"We're angry with the referee, but we have nothing to do now. The luck also plays and we didn't have it," he added.

"We were close to the qualification, but the referee didn't help us. We wanted to advance to the second round because a whole country was behind us."
