VICTOR PUA FACTFILE

1956: Born March 31, in Uruguay.

1983: Key member of the successful Uruguay national side which wins the Pan-American games.

1990: Takes up first head coach job at River Plate Montevideo.

1992: Leaves River Plate in December after almost three years in charge.

1997: Takes over as coach of the Uruguay Under-20 side in January.

In July he leads Uruguay to an impressive second place in the World Youth Championships played in Malaysia, losing 2-1 to Argentina in the final, and begins a temporary spell as head of the full National team in December.

1998: Steps down from the National side in Janaury, but continues with the Under-20 team.

1999: Returns as head coach in July, leading the national side to the Copa America glory held in Paraguay.

Steps down to continue work with Under-20 team in August before leaving the job in December.

2001: Begins his third spell as National coach in February following Daniel Passarella's resignation three months earlier. Pua takes over with the team lying fifth in the South American quaifying group.

2002: Although able to finish just fifth in the CONMEBOL group, Uruguay qualify for the finals in Japan and Korea after a nailbiting play-off win over Australia.

June 11 - After losing to Denmark and holding France 0-0, Uruguay draw 3-3 against African side Senegal who progress to the second round at their expense. Pua resigns after failing to reach the last 16.
