Paraguay coach Cesare Maldini will wait until the last minute to decide if defender Denis Caniza is fit to play against Slovenia.

Paraguay need to beat the men from the Balkans to give themselves a chance of finishing second in their group, and they may not have Caniza because of a left knee injury he picked up in Tuesday's training.

If he can't play, Juan Carlos Franco will come in as a replacement.

The 27-year-old Caniza, who plays his club football for Santos Laguna of Mexico, is hopeful.

"I'm very motivated," he said.

"I want to play a match like this one. This will help me to get better."

Paraguay have one point and South Africa have four.

But the South Americans could advance if they win and overhaul South Africa, who face Spain, on goal difference.

"Spain will win their match," he said.

"It's a team with skill and history, and they will not want to lose. That would be a loss of prestige for them.

"We just have to be worried about winning by two or three goals.

"We have to be focused the whole match, and not slow down in the second half," he said.

Paraguay began with a draw against South Africa before losing to Spain.
