China's assistant coach Jin Zhiyang admits the country's football side has a long way to go before making an impact on the world stage.

The Chinese cannot progress to the second phase at their maiden World Cup after two heavy defeats.

Costa Rica beat them 2-0, though it could easily have been more, and Brazil strolled to a 4-0 triumph to seal Bora Milutinovic's team's fate.

That means they have nothing but pride to play for when they meet Turkey on Wednesday for their final Group C match.

Zhiyang admits everyone is disappointed with the way things have turned out, especially with fellow Far East nations Japan and Korea performing well.

He said: "There is still a difference between the strong teams and us in terms of strategy, tactics and skill.

"This is the reality and we have to face it. We have to face the music and find the root of our problems.

"There is also a distance between us and Korea and Japan. It is unlikely we can close the gap in a short period of time."
