Costa Rica striker Hernan Medford knows exactly
how his teammates are feeling ahead of the big Group C match with Brazil on
Thursday.
He was a sprightly 22-year-old when he was part of the side beaten 1-0 by the
Brazilians at Italia 90, the Central American team's first appearance at the
finals.
Twelve years later and the teams cross swords again, with Costa Rica needing a
point to join Brazil in the second round.
And Medford, the only survivor from the 1990 team, is adamant the 2002 squad
have a great chance of getting a result against the four-time winners.
He said: "The time is different. This team is much better, and I'm sure we
will score goals against Brazil.
"I don't know what the result will be, but we will play a much better match
than the one we played 12 years ago."
Medford also feels the team were too frightened of their illustrious opponents
back then.
He admits Brazil are a team to be respected, but says you will not beat them
if you are scared.
"It is one thing is to be afraid of them, and a different thing to have
respect," he said.
"Twelve years ago we were afraid. Now we'll make it harder for Brazil.
"In this World Cup there are no big or small teams, because many of the
favourites are very close to returning home early."
