Football fans went on the rampage in the centre
of Moscow on Sunday after Russia lost 1-0 to Japan in their latest World Cup match.
Large screens had been set up in Manezhnaya square near the Kremlin, where
around 10,000 people assembled for Sunday morning's clash with the World Cup
co-hosts.
But after Junichi Inamoto's second-half goal proved to be decisive rioting
broke out across the city centre.
Reports said that one man had been killed and as many as 30 injured but
Moscow's police chief Vladimir Pronin moved quickly to deny the story saying:
"No-one was killed but some policemen were injured."
Several cars were turned over and some set on fire as the fighting spread from
near the parliament building down Tverskaya Street.
Shop windows were smashed and running battles with the police took place.
The police appear to have been taken by surprise by the ferocity of the
attacks after overseeing peaceful scenes last Wednesday when thousands gathered
to watch Russia win their opening game against Tunisia 2-0.
