Ossie Ardiles has accused the Argentina
players of jeopardising their World Cup dreams by being too complacent.
The Argentinians were installed as one of the pre-tournament favourites, but
now face a battle to make the second round after defeat to England.
"After building up the Argentina side as world beaters, I have to admit
something went seriously wrong for my countrymen," said the former Tottenham
star.
"They seemed to forget that in the World Cup you simply must take one game at
a time.
"If you get complacent, start dreaming about the World Cup final before you
get there then you will come unstuck."
Defending champions France have also struggled after just one point from two
games, but Ardiles is still backing both teams to rescue the situation.
"I know France have to beat the Danes by two goals but I think they will
achieve it," said the 1978 World Cup winner.
"But if either of the big guns go out, they will only have themselves to
blame. No team in the World Cup has a divine right to advance.
"It doesn't matter what talent you have in your team, at the World Cup you
have to fight as well.
"Argentina found that out in Sapporo and they will have to learn the lesson
very quickly."
Ardiles, however, believes England's attitude was spot on.
"If there is one thing you can say about English players generally, it is
that they will usually have the right attitude for big games," he said.
"They treated the game against Argentina like a cup final. They were positive
in everything they did, Argentina weren't and they paid the consequences."
And Ardiles revealed the Argentinian press have already started laying into
superstars like Manchester United's Juan Sebastian Veron.
"Believe me, the inquests in Argentina to this result will be heavy," he
added in his column on the Argentinian Football Association website.
"Everything looked rosy before the game, but already the rumours are
starting. People are saying Veron is carrying an injury, others are saying
Gabriel Batistuta and coach Marcelo Bielsa aren't seeing eye to eye."
