Not many goalkeepers can claim to have kept a
clean sheet for a year but Costa Rica captain Erick Lonnis could reach the
milestone during the World Cup.
Lonnis has gone 502 minutes - over five-and-a-half games - without conceding a
goal for the national team, the last strike to beat him coming from Honduras'
Amado Guevara after 38 minutes of a 3-2 win in Tegucigalpa on July 1 2001.
And with almost a full 12 months without seeing a goal against him, Lonnis is
eager to reach the anniversary, starting with Sunday's game against Turkey.
"The idea is not to concede even one during the World Cup," he said.
"It's a challenge not only for me, but for all my teammates in defence.
"Now, we just want to add another 90 minutes with no goals.
"We're calm and motivated to face Turkey. We're confident in playing a better
game than against China.
"It's something cultural - Costa Rica perform better when the challenges are
bigger."
And he received the backing of coach Alexander Guimaraes, who said: "A streak
like Lonnis is having is important because it gives confidence to the whole
team."
Lonnis will keep up a tradition of successful Costa Rican goalkeepers.
Goalkeeping coach Luis Conejo was voted as the tournament's best goalkeeper by
influential French magazine France Football in the country's previous World Cup
appearance in 1990.
