The Argentine media have singled out Juan
Sebastian Veron for criticism following the midfielder's disappointing
performance in the 1-0 World Cup defeat to England.
Daily newspaper Clarin labelled Veron, who was taken off at half-time, "the
standard-bearer for disappointment" adding his display was "his worst ever for
the national team".
La Nacion went further blaming the Manchester United star as one of the
reasons behind the result.
"It was the worst night Veron could have imagined," the paper stated. "He
represented all the bad things about Argentina in a 45 minutes to forget. He
showed a lack of precision and looked numb."
They also noted that striker Michael Owen was the "star that guided
England". It was Owen who was felled for the penalty which captain David
Beckham converted for the only goal of the game.
And that "for Argentina, the match which they had waited so long for turned
out to be like a thorn through the heart. And nothing or nobody could take it
out".
Sports daily Ole conceded that "Argentina were deserved losers" but that it
was "no time for tears".
