Whoever is handed the job of refereeing Costa
Rica's match against Turkey will find themselves under even more pressure than
usual for a World Cup official.
The Central Americans have already expressed their disappointment at the
strict refereeing of Greece's Kyros Vassaras, who showed them four yellow cards
in their 2-0 over China.
Coach Alexander Guimaraes said: "It was too severe. Some of the yellow cards
were unnecessary."
But Turkey were so dismayed with the performance of Korean official Young Joo
Kim during their 2-1 defeat to Brazil - which they ended with nine men - they
have gone one step further.
Senol Gumes' side have requested that the 34-year-old Benin official Coffi
Codjia scheduled to take charge of Sunday's game be replaced with a more
experienced official.
Turkey team manager Can Cobanoglu argued: "This is a decisive match and Benin
does not even have a league. I don't think (Codjia) will be able to handle a
game of this importance."
Of more immediate concern to Costa Rica, however, was the absence of
midfielder Carlos Castro from training after he missed his flight back to the
team's training camp following the China match.
Castro took four hours to complete a routine doping test, missing the plane
from Gwangju to Seongnam and having to be driven back before being given the day
off.
