Ecuador coach Hernan Gomez has a number of
options available to him as he considers a replacement for experienced
midfielder Alex Aguinaga ahead of the clash with Mexico on June 9.
Aguinaga suffered a thigh strain during the South Americans' 2-0 defeat to
Italy and the Ecuador Football Federation confirmed Aguinaga will miss their
next Group G game:
A spokesman said: "Alex Aguinaga will not play against Mexico due to an
injury that will force him to rest for four days."
Among the possible replacements are forwards Ivan Kaviedes, Carlos Tenorio,
Angel Fernandez and Kaviedes.
Each of the quartet represents a more attacking option than playmaker
Aguinaga, but Gomez appears willing to restructure the side for the very
different challenge of Mexico.
And it is young striker Kaviedes - whose performance against Uruguay in
qualifying took Ecuador to their first ever World Cup - who may get the nod.
Gomez said: "We will see how Kaviedes is. He gave us a vital hand (in
qualifying) and deserves an opportunity."
The Celta Vigo player holds the distinction of having been the top scorer in
the top divisions of world football in 1998 with 48 goals for Ecuadorians
Emelec.
