Tunisia are banking on strikers Ziad Jaziri and Adel Sellimi to fire them to an unlikely victory in their Group H opener against Russia in Kobe on Wednesday.
Khemais Laabidi, who took over as assistant coach to Ammar Souayah when Frenchman Henri Michel quit in March, is looking to Jaziri's firepower to give them a shock win.
Etoile Sahel hitman Jaziri scored six goals during the qualifying campaign and Freiburg forward Sellimi, dropped under Michel, has since been recalled.
"We are looking for some surprises from Jaziri," said Laabidi. "He is quick and we are expecting some goals from him.
"Sellimi will be the focus and Jaziri will work off of him."
Since Michel's departure Laabidi says the Carthage Eagles have "gone back to basics" and have managed to foster a strong team spirit.
"We have spent two months together and the team is used to each other now and they play more naturally," added Laabidi after Tunisia's training session in Kashihara.
"Now the players and coaches are communicating very well and they are enjoying the training."
Russia will be strong favourites for the clash and Laabidi is well aware of the threat they pose.
"They're very good technically and very fast and they are also strong on the counter attack. We need to keep our shape against them."
