Mexican president Vicente Fox has praised the country's football team after they opened their World Cup campaign with a victory.

Fox was speaking on national radio hours after Mexico beat Croatia 1-0 in Group B thanks to a 60th-minute Cuauhtemoc Blanco penalty.

A delighted Fox said: "Congratulations to everybody who participated.

"We begun the tournament in the right way, and I say 'we' because we all feel part of this team as well.

"This will help us to go into the second match with lots of confidence. We're all with them."

Mexico will now face Ecuador and Italy in their other matches, knowing one victory will book their place in the last 16.
